Casual Youth Care Practitioner
Hours: Rossie aims to be flexible in the hours’ casual workers work and when the service needs the help of casual workers the most.
Fixed Hourly Rate: £13.58 per hour.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The primary responsibility is to provide care and support to young people in a safe and stimulating environment by meeting the physical, emotional, social, health and educational needs of young people based on their circumstances.
Teamwork and Collaboration:
- Function as an integral part of the care team, working collaboratively with colleagues
- Support the care teams and managers in implementing decisions, and adhering to Rossie's plans, policies, and procedures
- Stay up-to-date on and implement best practices in residential childcare, creating a quality high quality, nurturing care environment
Supporting Young People's Needs:
- Understand each young person's needs, provide support, and assistance with daily living skills, and support their learning, development, and wider achievement
- Establish safe and containing relationships with young people which allow them to feel cared for and listened to
- Develop a good understanding of each young person's history, needs, risk assessments and care plan to tailor support and nurture their strengths
- Maintain a clean, secure, nurturing and stimulating living environment that promotes positive development through education, play, leisure, and social interaction
- Participate alongside young people in fun activities, hobbies and interests which supports development in a number of areas
Safety and Well-being:
- Plan and positively engage the young people in a range of planned stimulating activities
- Uphold safety protocols to prevent incidents, accidents, and injuries. This includes supervising activities, de-escalating conflicts, and responding to challenging behaviours
Advocacy and Empowerment:
- Champion the rights of young people according to relevant legislation and Rossie's policies, respecting their privacy, choices, and cultural backgrounds
- Encourage young people to express themselves, participate in decisions, and take ownership of their lives
- Build trusting and supportive relationships with young people whilst acting as a role model
Supporting Growth and Development:
- Support young people’s learning during and outside of education
- Actively support young people's educational attendance and attainment, providing additional support and encouragement
Documentation, Collaboration and Communication:
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of young people's needs, progress, and incidents
- Maintain clear and positive communication with colleagues, families, and stakeholders, fostering collaboration for the young people's benefit
Additional Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in supervision, training/online training, and other required meetings
- Complete necessary inductions and ongoing training to fulfil job duties and achieve/maintain SSSC registration
- Maintain a flexible approach to work schedules as directed by the Duty Manager/Care Managers
- Undertake any additional duties assigned by the management team that are consistent with the role
- Assist with domestic tasks and food preparation as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Knowledge Base (Essential):
- Understanding of the needs of young people
- Awareness of Employer and Employee Code of Conduct as set down by the SSSC
Knowledge Base (Desirable):
- Residential childcare provision such as secure accommodation
- Relevant experience in writing reports, plans and records for young people and external agencies
- Trauma-informed practice/attachment theory
- Childcare legislation
- GIRFEC and care planning
- Child protection protocols
- The Promise – Promise Plan
Qualifications (Essential):
- Ability to undertake training in Behaviour Management/Physical Intervention
- Ability to undertake induction, continuous professional learning and role-related online training
Qualifications (Desirable):
- Ability to undertake HNC + SVQ Level 3 Social Care
- Possess or working towards the HNC in Social Care and/or an SVQ in Care at Level 3 (or Caring for Children and Young People)
- SVQ3 – Children and Young People
- HNC (preferably in Social Care)
- Other Relevant SSSC Registered Award
- Leisure/Recreation Qualifications/Awards
Experience (Essential):
- Working with young people in a voluntary/employment capacity
- Team working
Experience (Desirable):
- Employment in Youth Work and Child Care
- Residential childcare
